BRODY

“Please talk to me,” I said, fighting down the rising panic. I couldn’t figure out what the problem was.

Amber had been fine when I got to her apartment and gave her the flowers. Her sobs gradually subsided and I curbed my worry and waited. I gently stroked her back and when she raised her head, I kissed her forehead.

“You must think I’m insane,” she said with a shaky laugh. “Who bursts into tears after sex?”

“I’m worried that my performance was that bad,” I teased.

She laughed. “On the contrary. I think it was the best yet.”

I grew solemn and held her gaze. “Something’s wrong Amber. Please tell me what it is.”

Her smile disappeared and a vulnerable expression came over her features. “I got an email from a law firm in Pennsylvania,” she said. “It’s easier if I show you.” She got up and left the bedroom. When she returned, she had her phone with her.

“Here,” she said, handing me the phone. She slipped back into bed and propped her head on her arm to watch me as I read.

Horror filled me as I read the formal email. A letter asking Amber to cease and desist from contacting her mother or anyone in her family. I couldn’t believe that a person could do that. When I finished reading it, I stared at Amber.

“Is this real?” Pain and anger filled me. I curled my hands into fists. “What kind of a mother would do something like this? Get her lawyers to contact her daughter asking her to stay away.” I couldn’t sit still. I jumped from the bed and paced the bedroom.

“That was my first thought,” Amber said softly.

“I’m sorry Amber,” I finally said. It pained me to admit that there was absolutely nothing I could do to make it better. I hated that she had been having a streak of bad luck.

“Me too,” she said and added fiercely. “I’m sorry that I allowed Timber to convince me to sign up to search for my relatives. It’s as if I instinctively knew that it would not end well.”

“Oh sweetheart,” I said and went back to bed. The only thing I could do was to hold her, which I did. “I’m really sorry. If I knew that woman, I would strangle her.”

Amber giggled. “I believe you would.”

“There are some women who should not have been mothers, even if they gave their children away,” I said. “My mother would have been in that category too,” I said, shocking myself by saying it out aloud. I had thought it many times, but it was not something one said about their mother.

“Your mother sounded absolutely normal to me,” Amber said.

“She is on the surface but when you get to know her, you quickly realize how unsuited she is to motherhood,” I said, with a trace of bitterness in my voice. “Liz and I were raised by nannies. My mother was and still is a social butterfly. She’d rather have been anywhere else except raising her children.”

“Why do you think that was?” Amber asked me.
